Ear Esthetic (Otoplasty)

The most common deformity in the ear is called "scoop ear" or "sail ear" among the people. Due to the weakness of the ear cartilages, the ear folds are not formed sufficiently, and the condition where the auricle is curved forward and laterally than normal is called "scoop ear". The main reason is that the ears are too far from the posterior ear bone at an angle. This is usually a familial deformity.

Ear aesthetic or saying it medically, “Otoplasty” is a cosmetic surgical procedure. People may have otoplasty if they have aesthetic concerns about their ears from a birth defect like a prominent ear or an accident. Otoplasty can be carried out at any age, but usually after five years old.

Ear aesthetic is a procedure in which the shape, size, and position of the ears are changed by the surgeon. People may consider having an otoplasty from how far your ears stick from your head. There are other reasons to have this surgery such as misshapen ears.

In this essay, you will first read about the types of ear aesthetic techniques and an overview of the procedure of ear aesthetics. In the following parts, you will also be informed about the navigating healing after ear aesthetic and the effects of positive mental health of ear aesthetic.

Types of Ear Aesthetic Techniques

With the help of modern technology in the medical sector, almost all types of ear anomalies are corrected, and all kinds of ear reshaping are carried out by surgeons. The main objective of modern otoplasty is to reduce the complications to a minimum level.

There are different types of ear aesthetics in each of the techniques used varies.

  • Ear augmentation: This procedure is for people with small ears that have not completely developed. In this case, if they want to have normal size ears, they may consider ear augmentation a type of ear aesthetic, or otoplasty.
  • Ear pinning: In this ear aesthetic technique, the ears are brought closer to the head. This type of otoplasty can be a solution for people whose ears stick out prominently.
  • Ear reduction: This procedure is for a condition called “mactoria” in which the person’s ears are bigger than normal. People with that condition may consider having an ear reduction.

Step-by-Step Overview of the Procedure’s Ear Aesthetic

The procedure of ear aesthetics is divided into two main categories. Surgical otoplasty and nonsurgical otoplasty.

  • Surgical Otoplasty (Traditional Otoplasty): Surgical otoplasty is done under general anesthesia and the operation last a couple of hours. In surgery or in other saying traditional otoplasty, a plastic surgeon makes a small incision at the back of the ear. By doing that, the surgeon exposes the cartilage. Excess skin and cartilage is removed. A bandage is used to protect the ears and the patient must wear that bandage for the following days after the operation is completed.
  • Non-surgical Otoplasty: In the non-surgical otoplasty procedure, no incision was used. In nonsurgical otoplasty, only sutures are used to pin the ears back. By doing that, a symmetrical appearance of the ears is achieved. This procedure makes patient recovery period shorter and they can be back to school or to work easier. Navigating Healing After Ear Aesthetic

Navigating Healing After Ear Aesthetic

Healing or recovery of cosmetic ear surgery is often considered less intensive compared to other surgical procedures. But, as it is similar to any after-care period of surgery, there are still things to do and not to do for a patient.

Some of the dos and don ts after ear aesthetic surgical procedure are:

  • You should always wear your headband which will keep your ears during recovery
  • Keep your head elevated while resting or sleeping
  • Do not scratch incision parts at all
  • Follow the diet your surgeon gave you, nourishment is important after having a surgery
  • Avoid direct sunlight for a couple of months after the surgery
  • Do not smoke, it causes pure and slow healing
  • Stay calm, if you see discharge coming from your ear, it is usual in the first week of the recovery period.

Healthy individuals looking to improve the appearance of large, prominent or misshapen ears may be good candidates for otoplasty. The procedure can be performed as early as age four, which can help to lessen the psychological and emotional discomfort that children may otherwise endure. Otoplasty is also performed on adults.
Otoplasty can be performed once the ears are fully grown, which typically occurs around the age of four. There are many benefits to performing the surgery at an early age as it can lessen the emotional and psychological discomfort a child may otherwise have to endure.
There are different techniques for otoplasty depending on the particular problem. Incisions are typically located in the back of the ear. The cartilage may be sculpted and the ear bent back toward the head, sometimes with the use of non-removable stitches to hold the new shape. In some cases, it may be necessary to remove a piece of cartilage in order to create a more natural-looking fold.
Though the incisions made for otoplasty do result in scars, they are hidden as they are usually located behind the ears.
Patients can usually return to work or school within five to seven days.
Strenuous activities and contact sports may need to be postponed for about one to two months.
